Why skin pH info is important when choosing skincare products?

In our last article, we talked about the pH in our Calendula Cream, many of you might wonder why is so important for us to even mention it? Now lets discuss the importance here.
“First, we need to understand what pH refers to and why pH balanced skin care products are critical to the health and beauty of your skin. The term pH (power of hydrogen) refers to how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The pH scale ranges from 1-14. A pH of 7.0 is considered neutral (water is neutral) and anything over a pH of 7.0 is alkaline. Healthy skin has a slightly acidic pH in the range of 4.5-6.0” (said by Dr. Teri Dourmashkin at www.articlealley.com. )
When the skin is too alkaline, it can become dry, irritated and loses its ability to fight off bacteria. It is also the reason leads to blemishes and acne. On the other hand, a slightly acidic environment can fight off bacteria, fungus and pollutants. By saying that, Alkaline products should be avoided or minimized, such as foaming cleansers and soaps which are usually at the pH of 8.0 and above.
Conversely, products with overly acidic are also harmful to our skin. For example, strong glycolic peels that will demage the pH of the skin, causing redness, dryness and irritation. Excessive exfoliation by glycolic will cause our skin become extremely sensitive to sun exposure. (that is why a sunscreen is must after chemical peel)
“It is important to choose skincare products that have a pH close to our own skin.” (note: exfoliating products such as glycolic acid; however, must have a lower pH in order to exfoliate) (said by Dr. Teri Dourmashkin at www.articlealley.com. )

If you would notice, there are not many skincare companies that are giving us the pH info of their products, as a consumer, it makes perfect sense that we want this critical information before buying.
