One word that you are very familiar with, even it if you haven’t heard it before is PARABENS. Why? Because Parabens can be found in just about everything you use including lipsticks, moisturizers, or even your shampoos.

Parabens are naturally created, like those found in blueberries, so when a group of scientist released a report entitled “Concentration of Parabens in Human Breast Tumors“ many people, including the cosmetics industry, were caught by surprise. The report stated that it may be a possibility that parabens could be linked to breast cancer.

Wait… before you scream running to your bathroom to throw everything away, get the facts first. According to these scientist, parabens can be very sneaky. Like an agent in disguise, they can cause breast cancer by acting like estrogen.

However, the truth of the matter is that parabens are used in cosmetics as a way to safely protect consumers! They actually reduce and kill bacteria, fungi and molds and have an amazing safety record for keeping women around the world safe as they use these products daily. Unfortunately, due to these bad reports, parabens have been looked down on by consumers causing cosmetic companies to change their formulas to exclude parabans. This decision has unknowingly exposed consumers to products that have an increased chance of being un-protected from bacteria, fungi and mold.

The bottom line is that there is just not enough research to confirm any of the scientist findings:

• The bad press came from scientists that used only 20 individuals in the study without a control group; meaning, they didn’t have a normal group to compare their studies to.
• The studies were conducted on animals and only observed when they were purposely dosed with extremely high amounts of parabens. In reality, parabens are 100,0000 times weaker than the natural estrogen in a woman’s body!
• And most incriminating, the scientist said they could not prove where the parabens came from in their study. They don’t know if it came from food, cosmetics, or medicines!

After examining both sides, cancer research organizations have decided that larger studies need to be conducted in order to be sure that the parabens from the study caused breast cancer. Additionally, when compared to most other preservatives, the cancer research organizations state that when examining parabens and its track record, the safety benefits cannot be denied. Additionally, parabens have been proven to be:

• non-toxic
• non-mutagenic
• non-carcinogenic
• practically non-irritating
• non-sensitizing in the human population with normal skin

So, before you allow someone to play on your fear, do your research. Also, before you decide to use a product, do a little digging as well. Remember, your health always comes before beauty!
